Steven Levin, O.D. from Levin Eye Care Center shares how he decided to open his own business and how Horizon has helped it grow. Levin Eye Care Center is a full scope optometric care office, treating diseases, fitting glasses and contact lenses, and providing vision therapy. Dr. Levin is the only doctor in NW Indiana who is certified in Vision Therapy, which is an extremely rewarding endeavor that changes and improves lives every day.What inspired you to open your own business?After graduating from school, I joined a practice with two other doctors and as they retired I purchased the practice, opened a new facility, and currently practice in a 6,000 square foot facility.What were your biggest concerns about starting your own business?
In the midst of taking on a new facility and responsibility, I had to make sure to still stay on top of my field and up to date on all the newest technology. Aside from that, the new financial obligation of buying a building was also something I had to keep in mind.
What business steps did you take to get to where are you today?
I always try to be a leader in my field; always striving for excellence and success in everything I do, and I make sure all of my associates share the same philosophy. I also worked to expand my building space and expand my services, including vision therapy. I received the National Optometrist of the Year award in 2002. This is the highest award nationally in my field.
What major challenges and obstacles did you face in the process of opening your business?
The biggest obstacle I faced was finding the right building and the right location in Whiting, Indiana.
What have been the most valuable lessons you’ve learned throughout the process?
Have your goals, have your dreams, never give up. Just keep on working towards them, and it will become reality. Never allow negativity to enter your mind. Believe in yourself, believe in what you do, and as long as you keep a positive mental attitude you’ll succeed and accomplish what you want to.

Horizon Bank has been an excellent source of support and a great business partner. They’ve provided valuable referrals, and have always been available when I need clarification or to discuss financial matters.
